George has sunglasses. I have black shoes. Then, we can say: George has sunglasses and I have black shoes.

Now, let’s check how to use the word but. We use that word to contrast ideas.
Examples:

I like red sweaters. My mom hates red sweaters. Then, we can say: I like red sweaters but My mom hates them.

Susy needs shoes. She doesn’t need tennis (She has lots of tennis). Then, we can say: Susy needs shoes but she doesn’t need tennis.

We have some gloves. We don’t have coats. We can say: We have some gloves but we don’t have any coats.

My boyfriend wants to buy a new suit. I think it isn’t a good idea. We can connect those contrasting ideas as follows: My boyfriend wants to buy a new suit but I don’t think it’s a good idea .
We contrast ideas using affirmative and negative sentences:
I like shirts but I don’t like t-shirts.
and we can also contrast ideas with verbs that mean the opposite.
She hates jackets but she likes sweaters.

We use or to talk about different possibilities. Look at the following examples.

I want a coat or a jacket. That means that I want only one option.

What do you prefer when it’s cold? A jacket or a sweater. It means you prefer only one thing.

How do you like your pants? Black or white? It means you prefer only one color.

I need new pants or jeans for school. It means that I need only one option.
