When we ask for a person’s occupation we can ask one of the following questions:
Option 1: What do you do?
Option 2: What is your occupation?
Look at the following mini conversations and pay attention to the way we ask and answer.
Conversation 1:
A: What do you do?
B: I am a student
Conversation 2:
A: What is your occupation?
B: I am a student
As you can see, when we answer, We say: I am + a/an + occupation.
I am student (incorrect)
I am a student (correct)
I am an actor (correct)
When we ask and answer about a man:
A: What does he do?
B: He is a teacher
A: What does Juan do?
B: He is a teacher
A: What does your father do?
B: He is a teacher
A: What is HIS occupation?
B: He is a teacher
Again, we say “a/an” + “occupation”
When we ask and answer about a woman:
A: What does she do?
B: She is a doctor
A: What does Lupita do?
B: She is a doctor
A: What does your mother do?
B: She is a doctor
A: What is HER occupation?
B: She is a doctor
When we ask and answer in plural:
A: What do they do?
B: They are architects
A: What do Sam and Lulu do?
B: They are architects / Alternative: Sam is a doctor and Lulu is an architect
A: What do your brothers do?
B: They are students. / Alternative: My old brother is a doctor and my little brother is a student
A: What is their occupation?
B: They are architects
In plural, we don’t use “a/an” because “a” = one!
