Imperatives

Teachers use them a lot. Identify which ones your English teacher uses in your classroom.
Look and listen to the following imperatives.

Classroom

We can use the imperative to give a direct order: 

 

  Take that chewing gum out of your mouth

  Stand up

  Sit down

  Silence!

  Be quiet!

  Speak English

  Turn off your cell phone

We can use the imperative to give instructions:  

 

  Open your books to page 52

  Work in pairs

  Make teams

  Go to the board

  Raise your hand

  Listen and repeat

  Complete the activity

We can use the imperative to make an invitation: 

  Come in and sit down

  Let’s check homework

  Check your answers, please

  Follow me to the lab

Listening and writing exercise

Listen to the phrases and write the imperative you hear. Pay attention to intonation and stress.
