Capital letters, punctuation and linking words

In the English language we use capital letters in:

  • Proper names, last names: Alexis Hernández, Isabel Zárate,
  • Cities, towns, countries, continents, rivers: New York, Mexico City, Brazil, Europe, Nile River.
  • Titles: Mr. Velázquez, Ms. Herrera, Miss Smith
  • Days and months: Monday, Sunday, September, November, etc.
  • The pronoun: I
  • At the beginning of a sentence and after a period: Maky goes to the movies every Friday. She loves action movies.

Punctuation

We use a comma (,):

  • ● When we make a list of several elements.
  • ● To separate similar phrases.
  • ● Before the linking word: but.

We use a period (.):

  • ● When we finish a sentence or an idea.
  • ● At the end of a paragraph.
  • ● To separate different ideas.

Linking words

We use linking words:
