Giving directions in American sign language.
Sign language is used to communicate with people who can’t hear. Each country / culture has its own sign language. It is helpful to know the basic signs to help deaf people. In this section you will learn some signs to give directions. Keep the following suggestions in mind.
- Try to start with a point of reference that's familiar to both of you — such as a school, hospital, or traffic lights — then give the directions.
- Go from big to small; from general to specific. For example, in the U.S., you sign from state to city to neighborhood to street to house number.
When giving directions, you often establish relationships. This table lists the signs for the situational relationships you use to give directions.
Compass points are also used to give directions or indicate the position of a place or building. Look at the chart below.
If you want to say turn right twice in American sign language, you just sign right twice:
