Writing Mariana's life

Do you ever look back and reflect on how different you are now? Some things are probably the same but maybe you changed in other aspects. In the following writing exercise, we would like you to think of these differences and similarities and write a paragraph where you include aspects like how many friends you have, your interests, your hobbies, the music you listen to, and ways to entertain yourself. And since you’re going to compare and contrast, we recommend brainstorming some ideas in a chart before starting the paragraph.

Look at the example of Mariana, a girl whose life is pretty different after she finished studying high school.

Sample response…

At home I watched my favorite TV series everyday, and I went to the gym after school. On the weekends I went to the park to walk my dogs.

During weekdays, I went to school in the morning shift, when I got home I had lunch and afterwards I used to wash the dishes. Next, I did homework. Now that I have a baby, I usually wake up really early to feed my baby and I take care of her during the day. Now I only have time to check my Facebook account when my baby’s sleeping at night. I usually see my friends study and have fun at the same time, I miss them a little. Another thing that changed is the music I listened to when I was in Secondary school, because I loved listening to pop music on the radio mostly. But now I listen to classic lullabies because they help my baby sleep. I hope I can soon restart studying because my dream is still to become an engineer.

Now that you have brainstormed your ideas, if you want, you’re ready to write your own paragraph where you compare and contrast your life now with your life when you studied junior high school or primary school.
